Why Ceramic Dental Implants?

Natural

Natural

Metal dental implants have been used for decades in dentistry. However, they are not the most natural way of replacing teeth. Their use often results on grey lines around the teeth and dark gums. Althought the main metal used is titanium other metals in the implants can induce sensitivities, metals such as aluminum and nickel. Ceramic dental implants are made of Zirconia, a pure white ceramic that is extremely biocompatible and does not corrode. Because of the while colour this material blends in and looks like a natural tooth, never having metal showing in the mouth and imparting a natural colour to thin gums.

Strong

Strong

Ceramic dental implants are made of a single piece of Zirconia. Zirconia is one of the strongest ceramics available today. Being one piece there are no small screws attaching components to the implant. In titanium implants the alloy is strong but as a result of two-piece designs there are small screws that connect components and these screws can loosen or break over time. Zirconia implants are in fact 2-3 times stronger than the current titanium two piece implants.

Healthy

Healthy

Metal implants replacing teeth are comprised of two parts, the implant in the bone and the abutment in the mouth. The connection between these two components is a reservoir for oral bacteria. This bacteria grows and multiplies under the gums and can lead to bad breath, gum disease and eventual destruction of the support for the implants. Ceramic implants are made of a single piece that represents the part in bone and the part in the gum without any connections that can grow bacteria. This means that the ceramic implant is much healthier to the gum tissue and is more like a natural healthy tooth.

EXPERIENCE, PASSION & RESULTS

Dr. Dan Hagi DDS, FAGD, FICOI, (a)FAAID

Dentist, Lecturer, Author.

Dr. Dan Hagi is a pioneer of ceramic dental implantology in Canada. His clinic, The DH Smile Center, has treated more patients with ceramic dental implants than any other clinic in Canada. In 2013 he was honoured with the designation of Leading Dental Centre of the World, being only one of two clinics in Canada with this recognition.

Dr. Hagi completed his Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry graduating in 2003. He worked in Toronto as a General Dentist and then decided to focus on surgical and prosthetic dental implantology and pursued training with the Misch Implant Institute. In 2008 Dr Hagi started his full-time practice focused on Aesthetics and Implant Dentistry he early on developed an interest in the emerging field of ceramic dental implants. His passion for ceramics was fueled by the realization that current technology had its limitations. After years of preforming traditional implant surgery and restoration with metal based dental implants he realized that the design and material of these implants had a part in the numberous complications that he saw. Among these were screw loosenings, inflammation of the gums around the implants and gum recession leading to grey and black areas around teeth. As well, a new body of evidence, which showed that the many metal sensitivities could be to blame for some of the common complications seen around titanium implants in the human body. In 2011 he began placing ceramic implants and has achieved very high success rates commensurate with those of traditional titanium implants.

Dr. Hagi is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry and the International Congress of Oral Implantologists as well as an associate Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. Over the years, he founded the Dental Implantology Center of Excellence with a focus on offering a multidisciplinary education to General Dentists. He has authored a number of papers in dental journals about ceramic implants and ceramics in dentistry. He is an international lecturer and has been featured on all online dental expert education platforms including DentalTown, DentalXP and Osseonews. Dr Hagi enjoys an active lifestyle. He is an avid traveller and self proclaimed foodie. He also enjoys playing guitar and cooking with his wife, daughter and young son.
